Here are a few pics of a bow I picked up yesterday at an antique shop... two things intrigued me ...
1- The thumb screw and fingergrip appear to be silver on the basis of the charcoal gray color of the tarnish... which should indicate a decent quality bow
2-The screw appears to be not of standard cut threads but rounded (hand made?) threads

Also it seems someone commented on a previous thread somewhere that many of the classic makers did not mark their bows with their name... this bow is unmarked and feels to be of good quality brazilwood.

The bow has what appears to be poster paint split on it, but that will come off.

I have three questions I am hoping to get some guidance on or at least point me in the right direction......
1- How do you proceed to repair such a frog as this with half of it missing and the ferrule long lost? Can the bent lining be straightened without leaving a stress line?... or is it normal practice to just replace the frog?
2-Does the type of screw thread date this bow.... assuming of course it is original (the fit to the bow makes it seem that it is original
3- How do you begin to identify such a bow without markings?
Thanks folks! ... Mat

Mat,

Of course, you do what you want as regards the question "Fix or Replace the frog?"

I'd replace it myself - but then again, I've seen people take such things and make some magic happen to them - I guess it all depends on what you like to spend your time doing.

But me - I believe i would replace it, or perhaps, dare I suggest it?, if you're going to attempt to fix that one, perhaps you might try getting into frog making and make one?

Sure sounds like a realistic challenge.
