Great list of resources, very impressive. It's nice to see that some of the older sources are still there. Stuff has a habit of going away after a while on the net.

Things are hopping around here suddenly! Cool

"Sometimes slow", yes absolutely.

Still, I'm inclined to interpret the "slow" part, equals the lack of UNENDING BS you might have to wade through elsewhere, to get to the violin related material...

Ok, call me critical. It's true I have become somewhat critical - Mat, no doubt, this is always a "pleasant and no BS forum".
(Good call, I'm glad there are others who see things the same way I do.)

I've added a few more references and web sites, along with some brief descriptions of some of them. I really like Thomas Gerbeth's site, because of the helpful narrative and clear color photos. A drawback is that it's in German. With the help of Google Translate, you may still find it helpful.

This is pretty exciting stuff, to me. I have long desired to learn bow-making, and a wealth of information is being shared, here.

I don't know if anyone needs the resource, but tools, hair and other materials are all available from Lynn Hannings (and other places, obviously...I would like to know the other places, too, if someone wants to post the links, please.)

Lynn's link is www.lahbows.com You can look down the list of links on the side, and see where the tools are, etc.

This is the bow plane that Lynn Hannings sells. Thoroughly recommended by Boyd Poulsen, and the ones my daughter loves to use.

Lynn has just received a new supply of them.

That one doesn"t seem to be on her website-- are there any other photos available? I can't figure out what I am seeing in that one. (?) Must have my eyeballs installed wrong...

This plane is a very strange. I am somewhat of a plane maniac and have never seen this configuration in any other plane. It boils down to a bevel up scraper. The bed angle seems to be a 65 degrees, and with a blade that seems to be ground at 40 degrees, that gives you 105 degrees angle of attack, or in other words a 15 degree negative rake.

cheers,

So that is the side of the plane we are looking at? I was really having a hard time orienting the thing in my mind...

We are looking at the left side of the plane.

There is also a cutout (that shows as a black spot because of bad lighting) for shavings to escape. The piece of sole in front of the mouth seems to be connected to the body of the plane on the right side of the plane.

If you can't locate this plane, take a Stanley #75, remove the front part (designed to be removed if I recall correctly), and flip the cutter bevel up. However, I think the Stanley #75 has a 45 degree bed angle. So to achieve the same results, as the Lynn Hannings plane, you'd need the blade ground at roughly 60 degrees.

cheers,

Soo,
I'm guessing that planes, that operate much like scrapers, have a large role in bow making...

Is that what we're seeing here?

Now guys, you are asking a tool illiterate female questions about a plane!!!! Gosh darn it, I thought I was trying to help yer Laughing

Yes that is the left side of the plane, and basically it is used like a scraper, I think the way Lynn Hannings and Boyd Poulsen teach, you basically use scraper planes on pernambuco, at least for the roughing out.

The other plane kiddo uses is:
http://www.veritastools.com/Products/Page.aspx?p=495

Some of the problems kiddo has is that she has small hands and not many tools are made for gentile women folk! Rolling Eyes

Hope that helps, and please excuse the ignorant Mum.
