I do this on a drill press with a special jig, but I've always been intrigued by hints that the 'old school' method is to do this holding the stick freehand to a bow drill--is this even true?

If so, can anyone post details on how this works?

Hi Andres, I do it by hand. Basically, using a hand-made spade bit, I align the shaft of the stick with that of the drill bit as it projects out of the bow drill. Then I begin bowing with the bow (or sometimes using only my hand to power the drill). After a several turns, I rotate the shaft of the bow stick by 90 degrees, again aligning the stick and the drill bit. That way if it was out of alignment in one plane (the one you're not looking at during phase 1), then it lines itself back up after rotating the 90 degrees. It's not fool-proof (otherwise I wouldn't be allowed to do it :)) but it works okay. I was wondering how you would do it in a drill press (I mean - making sure the stick and the drill are aligned precisely enough)?

I use a drill bit which is the same diameter as the stick as a guide for aligning a stick-holding jig. It's not foolproof either. Wink
