I have read that the old master violin makers used nails to
secure the neck to the violin, along with the hide glue.
Do any of the famous Cremonese instruments being played
today still have the nails?

Im sure any instruments that have not gone through the neck change during the 19th century. Showroom pieces, random instruments. and so on

Hi Mat,

Yes -- it really is a good site. I was recently reminded of that particular page in a Maestronet posting. You can follow links to several other instruments, with great photos.

Hello,

I come across violins rarely still with nails in them, but am always excited to discover this, when I see them.
even moreso when the neck has not been grafted.

I see violins with traces of nails VERY OFTEN. The holes are often visible, as stated by another user on this forum.

I have also seen some 17th century violins that were cheaply made, also with nails.i.e it does does mean the violin was made by a master.

greetings from Italy,
Sal

Salvatore,
Thanks for your reply. I'm sure it is interesting when you run upon
one of these old violins.
