Hi,

I'd like to know what sweep gauge you use for the sides of the frog. I walked into a store with a frog and it closely matched the profile of a #6 sweep on a Pfeil carving gauge. Now from some of the readings, I find a #5 sweep mentioned.

The only time I saw someone carve the round sides of a frog was in a video (which I can no longer find, but it was a guy with a funny tuque on YouTube) using a Japanese scribing gouge.

cheers,

Hi wm

I don't pay any attention to the sweep of the gouge because I carve the sides going across the grain - not along the length of the frog. The I use abrasives to get rid of the gouge marks. Maybe others have some other comments?

I'm using a sweep #5, 1" gouge. I see that Bolander used a 26mm gouge, of unspecified sweep, but probably about 5. I may have to try Ed's method, though!
