I should have known it was MUCH, MUCH simpler than Ed was showing...

Darn!

That's right - and it's about da#n time... (# = r)

Today I'm making something (a jig/holder of sorts) to keep the bow blank at 45 degrees from "flat", so that I can comfortably plain the 4 edges of the square of the shaft evenly, with regard to the basic square shape it has been initially cut to.

I do plan on posting a photo of the results later today.

So far were not tapering, correct?

I am assuming at this point, that we'll taper the stick, AFTER making the whole stick roughly octagonal? (?)

So far, so good, Ed.

You're a good, direct teacher. (at least - you're going at a speed and simple clarity I can keep up with!)

I'll look forward to seeing the jig Craig. I got a lot of good tips from your video a few years ago so I'm glad if I can share anything with you. However - this is not going to be finished in a hurry I'm afraid.

But no - we are tapering at this point. By the time the stick is ready to bend it is about 3mm too wide at each point - in other words at the point were the finished stick will be 8 mm it is around 11 mm when it is cambered. At the point where it will be 7 mm it is now at 10 mm and so on. This is not very exact I suppose. The point is to leave enough extra wood so that after bending any small twists or kinks can be planed out.

Having it tapered at this time helps in the bending process, because the camber gets more and more steep toward the head so it helps to have the stick getting thinner and thinner toward the head.

In fact the cambering is done - I'll get the pictures posted later today I hope.

Well, the article cited at the top of this thread may seem a bit silly, but I've been intrigued to discover just how many of the old masters used woods other than Pernambuco. See http://www.maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/322837-wood-identification/

Didn't see any spruce mentioned, though...

I've seen a bunch of other EHow articles that were also a total load, and I've come the conclusion that the entire site reminds me of a cattle pen.
