Rather than clutter up Craig's thread, and in hopes that it will be more easily found with a search, here's the info. on the cutter I found, which several people are using as an alternative to Michael Darnton's rotary file.
It's a keyseat cutter: 12 tooth, straight-tooth, HSS, 1" dia., 1/4" cutter height ('face width'), #808. McMaster has them for about $30, and any machinist's supply also. My specific one is a Keo, #88080.
Feed against, not with the rotation. Terrible things will happen to you if you go with, and your hand gets sucked in.

Just tried it on some soft domestic US maple and the cut started to get boringly slow for how hard I was willing to push at 4 mm, but the tool was still humming contentedly. I was using an old Taiwanese benchtop drill press at 3000 rpm. _________________ You can only connect the dots that you have. |
