|

Just thought I'd post a couple of simple homemade tools that make the job quick and easy (and more accurate) - these two are for purfling, but please, add any of your own that might help the members here when building...
These just happen to be about purfling because that's what I'm doing right now, but I'd kinda like to start a thread about ANY homemade tools/jigs that people might use.
Cool?
By the way, the blur here is a chisel, which I use for shaving the purfling to whatever profile the tip requires for the corner join. (notice it has already been bent on the hair curler... which was about $10, and which heats up in about - oh, say, ten seconds) After the tight curl is formed and the join is correct - it only requires very little further bending, and in fact, with this cheap fiber purfling, it very often will simply bend around the large curve of the bout with no further heat bending.

I like the cutting post. Good thought--I have always struggled with the bent purfling, and sometimes snapped it (the wooden variety) by snagging it on something while trying to manipulate it into position for cutting. _________________ Chet Bishop

Yeah kjb, I've got a "proper" bending iron too, but it takes forever to heat up and cool down, and is a bit clumsy for the purfling... _________________ Look,

Yeah - the same with the fiber stuff.
So, tell me Chet, I've decided start using wooden purfling also, from now on. Simply because I know it is considered a much better quality product, and I believe I can fairly easily imagine why it would result in a better, or more even quality job. (Ok, so I've been a cheap-skate up till now)
Where do YOU buy it? Or, do you think it matters?
Or, do you think the wooden stuff bought from the regular bulk suppliers (the catalog dealers and such) is good enough.
One of my real concerns is with regularity or consistency - very often this cheap fiber stuff is slightly different in the band widths & etc., and from now on, I'm looking for purfling that matches itself EXACTLY - color and width wise...
I'm sort of curious about this, if it's even a concern, since I've never bought any of the wooden purfling yet. _________________ Look,

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Bruce Willis bending purfling - when he caused it to split, sending splinters into the group of hijackers?
Or was that a different movie? _________________ Look,

Excellent point kjb,
Lemuel provides us with this forum, and has an excellent and helpful personality on-line...
Hmmm,
Why didn't I think of this? Ahh - who knows?
But the fact is that You''re right,
Lemuel it is! - and "European" sounds about right too. I believe you've talked me into it. _________________ Look,

Love the curling iron idea. We just sold our bending iron as we are moving to UK, different electrical system there. I think we will be buying a curling iron and using that.
Please keep going with sharing home made jigs, they are the best and cheapest way of solving issues.
The only jigs we have are what other people have shown us. Simple, but do the job. |

Interesting how purfling definitions differ. I used to get great fiber from Int. Luthiers Supply, then tried Int. Violin's fiber. It was junk, so I switched to their wood, which I heard somewhere is made by Karin Rost. I didn't like the "German" style and switched to "Italian," which works OK. I assume Lemuel's is good, but seems to be thicker than I want and the blacks thinner.
And I use too many home made tools to list. |

Here's my version of Michael Darnton's purfling setup. Works great!
