Hi all. Still working on my first violin. I'm at the point where I'm ready to begin arching on my violin top. My master wants me to pick a violin and transfer arching shapes and make my own template instead of using others. He believes being a violin maker, I would have to get a nice skill for this and I agree.
So there are many ways to do this task I suppose. My master mentioned a method where I can use a countour gauge (better if made of plastic) and transfer those shapes onto a piece of stock and shape the template from there. I just purchased a 10" plastic countour gauge, which is fine for getting the arching from bouts, but what about the long arching across the violin? I suppose I should have at least 4 templates total, upper bout, center, lower bout and then from top to bottom blocks.

My question is. Are there any good methods of transfering arching from an instrument onto a template? Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for your post.

I probably have and use the same contour gauge. I would transfer them first to a thick paper (bristol board) and from there to 1/8" Masonite.

For the length, I would make two templates, as long as you make sure your total height in the center is correct, it should work.

The Strads that I took templates from were a real eye opener. The belly arches were in the 16-16.5 mm range, and yet the arch was so graceful that it was difficult to believe that such a "high" arch could appear so flat.

All the best with your project.

You might find what I'm doing with a construction laser to be helpful. Go to this page, http://darntonviolins.com/violinmaking.php , and look for the laser links in the construction techniques section.

Thanks for the reply gentleman.

I suppose I need to make templates from a top that is removed from the instrument. Becuase the fingerboard, strings, bridge and tailpiece get in the way.

If you are interested, take a look on the Harbor Freight website-- they have large plastic contour gauges, for a fairly low price. They are constructed in such a way that you can fasten two of them end to end, and have a very long contour gauge.
