Hi all. I recently read of wood carvers soaking their wood in water and carving the wood while being very wet. I wonder if any luthiers do this while carving the scroll? _________________ "I only write the notes as written, it is god that creates the music." J.S. Bach |

Yes some do. The degree ranges from stories of high production shops where someone keeps a bunch of scrolls in a bucket, to people who dip, brush, or lick now and then when doing final cuts. |

I wonder how planing is whilst a block of wood is wet. Curly maple is giving me hell, even with my raxor sharp planes. _________________ "I only write the notes as written, it is god that creates the music." J.S. Bach |

never heard of people soaking the wood, but I do wet the wood with a damp rag if I am having trouble with it, works great for endgrain!
planing wen wet does help controll the tear out and does make work a bit easier.
