I'm wondering how to count a dotted eighth note, a sixteenth note, and another eight note, in 6/8 time. I realize that this would be the first three beats, or 1 + a, but I'm not sure how to count it in this case. Is there a detailed chart that explains rhythms? Thanks. |

A dotted note extends the duration of the note by half it's original duration.
So a dotted eighth note would be 1/8 plus 1/16 (you would hold this note
until the next beat in the case of 6/8 timing). By the time you reach the
third beat, you will play the other eighth note.
So here is an easy way to count it.
Break each eighth beat into two 16 beats.
So counting in 16ths (The left column is what you speak out loud)
1.......Play dotted eighth note
2.......Hold
3.......Hold
4.......Play sixteenth note
5.......Play last eighth note.
6.......Hold
If we counted in 8ths it would be done this way (Count the numbers with and included).
1........ Play dotted eighth note
and.... Hold
2........ Hold
and.... Play sixteenth note
3........ Play last eighth note
and.... Hold
I hope this is clear. If not, please let me know. |
