Finally got to the final coat (six). Will probably put on another two of clear. Have purchased some medium Tripoli powder and wondered if someone would recommend a medium to use while rubbing down. Mineral spirits perhaps or linseed oil?
Thanks
Terry

I usually use rottenstone mixed in with mineral oil. Works well for me. I'll be curious to hear what others do as well.

I know you're talking about a medium to use with the abrasive, but I thought I'd also add that these...

make great applicators. Peel away the sticky side, apply to your index finger, and dip in to your polishing slurry... works great. Also, you can trim them square, to better get into the corners, around the neck rib interface etc...

I overlooked the medium part. That's a great idea actonern. Right now I'm using small cut up pieces of felt soles from old fishing boots (unused...)

I've used rottenstone, its a nice finish, shiny without beeing too glossy. I find felt a bit too abrasive but use pieces of old t-shirt cloth, and olive oil from my wife's cupboard as a medium.

With tripoli I use mineral oil and a light touch. Be careful not to get in a rut, like following the purfling around the edge because it's easy. If there's a bit of something on the cloth, it will dig a track in the varnish as you go over and over the exact same spot.

I use pieces of old t-shirt.

I use a good quality round shoe polishing brush with rottenstone and boiled linseed oil. Works good on the edges and flexes to the curved surfaces better than fingers with removing to much material imo. Still have to be careful though good luck!

For powdered abrasives I use hard felt which can be shaped to get into tight areas. I got mine from McMaster Carr. They have it in 12x12x1/2"sheets in various grades. The hard felt is much more dense and fine in texture than felt insoles. I cut it into 1 1/2 " squares. It seems to be long lasting so my 12x12 sheet will outlast me.
