I just flew Air Canada to China and although I saw no Violas on board, there was plenty of carry on luggage that dwarfed a Viola case. Hopefully this nonsensical policy gets revised. Probably devised by some official who plays the harmonica.

P.S. Just mentioned the harmonica as it's the smallest instrument I could think of. Nothing personal. I own six.

We're a very resourceful people... and will put on a set of violin strings when flying. Who's to say how big a violin has to be???

There's probably a sensical explanation -- my first thought, a violin case fits in overhead, a cello in a seat (you have to buy a ticket), but a viola is probably too large for overhead. Just my thoughts.

Good joke!! I guess somebody, who did not know what a viola was, read too many viola jokes and thought that violas might be a hazard to the passengers!
Here is the update...
http://www.theviolinchannel.com second article down.
Cheers, Mat

Violas do fit in the overhead. Had a violin, viola, and cello (who had a seat) on flight Phoenix to London, no problems. OO yes, and a service dog.

violas?

Who cares?

(ok, sorry - there may be a person here who does...)

(guffaw - this is so typical for governmental/big business administration decisions... listen, we're in charge, and we're going to tell you how to act and what you can and cannot do, understand?)
