An interesting observation by Steve Rosso of the Trio Violin Project (the CT scanning of dozens of Cremonese Violins), what he calls the "Amati Smile" referring to the cross-sectional shape of the violins back at the "c" bout. He observed that the middle and ends of the arch ramain pretty thick.
