Finished and ready for varnish. Another strad. My last violin sold within a couple weeks, so I'm motivated to get this one done. I only have one playable violin in the house right now .... I like to have several and go back and forth in the evenings trying to figure out which sounds better, or what I can do to enhance the sound.

OP24 out soaking up some sun. I started out with tea stain, then in a container with a saucer of ammonia for about 2 hours, came out a light cinnamon brown. Then Italian Golden Ground from Oldwood (Spain). Later today, it will get a coat of refractive ground, then imprimatura minerale (maybe doratura minerale, haven't made up my mind yet), and finally varnish by this weekend.

OK... can't resist....
what would happen to your finish (and your state of mind) if a bird landed on your lovely violin and dropped some of his own treatment on the varnish? would it just wash off or leave a blotch?
The birds in our back yard seem to love to leave mementos of their presence on our lawn chairs, tables and umbrellas.
Cheers!... Mat

It would just give it character I guess. I would think that if I didn't get it off right away, within an hour or so, it would etch the finish. May not be too bad a problem unless its your final coat of varnish you're curing outside. Because the weather can change quickly, I don't leave my violins unattended for more than an hour or two anyway, I just get nervous about them outside, and rely more on my UV light box.

Joe,

I'm in process of fitting it up now. Will post in the next day or two. I was on vacation for 4 weeks, so varnish has had a good opportunity to harde, spent the entire month in my UV box.

Here are three views, the model is a 1735 Guarneri (Plowden) from the poster in STRAD. Not as red as the first photo would lead you to believe, more the color of the next two photos.

Yes, a bit of a glue line on the back -- it keeps staring at me trying to get my attention. I think glue gelled before I got it clamped, but looked OK at tiime of clamping. IN the long run, I would have been correct to resaw and go again.

Color varnish was put on very thinly in one application with 50/50 varnish and a mix of artist oils (which are mostly linseed oil based). If there's a way to get the colors as intense, but more transparent, would be nice to hear. I really like putting the color on this way, saves a lot of time, and alot of varnish. Maybe time to start buying "the good stuff", so I'm looking for your opinions on this.
