kjb, you asked about the width across the c-bouts, and I initially misunderstood, and gave you the width between the eyes of the f-holes. No idea why I got fouled up on a simple thing like that.
The narrowest point of the center bouts (right at the height of the upper eyes) is 110 mm. I don't know if that is exactly what you wanted...hope so.
Feeling pretty beat-up today from the long day yesterday. hands are hurting. Probably won't do much today, thopugh I did tweak the soundpost a bit on the newly completed 5-string. The C already sounds good, but I am trying to improve it just a little more. Perhaps it is already at its best and I should leave it alone. _________________ Chet Bishop

For those still interested, here is another progress report:
http://www.bluefiddles.com/2015/07/five-string-fiddle-progress-report-4-graduation/
And here is the other project that was holding me up, for a few weeks:
The old cedar decking had lasted in the neighborhood of 27 years, but it was definitely beginning to rot. I laid down "Outdoor Wood" (pressure-treated but without the perforations) and hope that the next time it needs to be replaced, someone else will have the privilege. _________________ Chet Bishop

I will try to get a photo.
They were given to me by Jake Jelley. There are different depths for different areas of the bassbar...one for the neck end, the tail end and four locations in between. Each has padded jaws (cork) and a wing-nut and bolt for the clamping mechanism. _________________ Chet Bishop

BTW, that bottom arm seems to be fine-grained spruce, or fir, maybe, and the plywood sections are glued onto it...I have no idea why.
They do work nicely, as there is little or no sideways pressure, and the amount of pressure is completely adjustable. I have six of them, each a different length, for different sections of the bass bar. _________________ Chet Bishop

The obvious reason for the plywood is to compensate for the bolt hole. The set I made has both arms the same width. They aren't as pretty as yours but are all identical and work just fine. |
