|
|
This is a violin I am finishing up with a worn look accomplished through a couple of different techniques. The first was to wet the wood before sealing and applying the ground to raise the grain. The top was more corduroyed, and the curls in the top were more pronounced as well. Water made the grain on the head, ribs and back more dynamic, also.
Then, after sealing, applying the ground, and applying red varnish in the "unworn areas", a little TransTint dye, medium brown and reddish brown, was used where desiring an older look. The dye is water soluble. I highly recommend these dyes for repair, restoration and touch-up work and they work great for the kind of stuff on this instrument. If you don't like the look, you can usually just wash it off and do it again. Once getting the look you want, let it dry and cover over with varnish, although it wasn't varnished until after doing what is described below.
The violin was then rubbed down with rotten stone and oil. This left the dark stained areas in the low spots. The photograph of the of the lower treble top shows the look created and the head has an older look, too. After this, clear varnish, rubdown and French polishing.
The "chipped" area of the back was made by mixing some asphalt and varnish and painting it into the lighter varnished areas to create a visible distinction between the two varnishes. If you blow up the photograph, you will see these areas in the center of the back and upper treble of the back.
The violin is made from the Titian Strad poster. I liked the ET scan on the poster which gave me a more precise form. The last photograph is of me with a Titian model I made from this same form for a client last year. It was a straight red over yellow ground.
