I assume you mean 0.8 mm thick. Most of mine are a little thinner, but yours should be OK. I wish I could give you definitive answers on turning the burr, but for me it is still somewhat hit or miss. I do find that some steel works better. I find cheap hacksaw blades to turn fairly well and hold the burr.

An alternative that works well for people like Michael D. but not for me is to put a 45 deg knife edge on scrapers instead of turning a burr. Otherwise, just keep trying until you get the hang of it.

Are we talking flat scraper or round?
if flat , when I first was trying , I made the angle 90 degrees, and it was hit or miss I admit. but basically i put it in a vise and tried to keep a smooth push with the file flat to 90 as I could. I used a fairly smooth file If i remember right. The scraper I was using was a putty knife and I could get some good cutting edges from it.

I would take a couple of passes, and you could feel the teeth cutting the metal , if you are not feeling the teeth cutting the metal then you file is not hard enough for the scraper, with is possible. I think at the time i left the burr, but later used a knife steel, the one that are round, this one was mostly worn out but still very hard. this takes the burr off , and leaves a nice sharp edge.

round ones are more difficult to do like this.
but the principal is the same

now I use sanding belt machine with the angle set, to get the angle correct. then I stop it with red rouge on a flat disc sharpener. this make it very shiny. The reason I do this is that I use a hacksaw blade which is harder than the files I have, so that is not an option. BUT these scrapers stay sharp a long time and get extremely sharp and cut spruce pretty well.

hope this helps, and like LP said, just keep trying as long as you file is harder than your steel. if not you are wasting your time.

Thank you Lp & K J B for the reply .o8 mm 10mm would be kind of thick .
I just sharpened one with 45 deg like Michael D. way & it works great
Used A small fine file & it cut well Thanks again for your help .

Ps I also found out how to set up a spoke shave the sole has to be flat
When you buy them the sole is not flat . After you get it flat & a sharp
blade I find they work almost as good as a hand plane . Ken

Hey Ken... I bought one of these... http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=32642&cat=1,310,41070
...and it works wonders. The nice part is it is very smooth and does not snag the edge at all leaving a nice clean edge.
I trim my scrapers to 90 deg then burnish both sides and that gives me two edges to work with.
Here is a video of essentially what I do....

Happy scraping!... Mat

Hello Mat thank you for your reply . I have a Burnisher like the one you posted & still its` a hit & miss thing . Sharpening 45 deg the Michael D. way works great for me now.
.I will keep trying like the video til I get it .
Some times simple things are not so simple for simple people eh.

After you sharpen the 45-degree edge, which I do to a knife-standard finish, on a 13,000 Chinese natural stone, take your burnisher and VERY GENTLY run it along the bevel side, at about 85 degrees. This turns the sharp edge to a very fine hook, and that's all you need. If you do this gently, you won't shred the edge, and then when it stops working, put the burnisher flat on the flat side, and pull the hook back out straight, then burnish the hook in, again. If you are careful and don't damage the edge you can do this a half-dozen times, and the steel hardens by work hardening and lasts longer each time.

Michael would you liken the amount of force to that of writing with a quality ballpoint or a felt tip? I think it's hard for many people to believe how lightly you mean until they see it.

As one of the theoretical Moderators (and I say "theoretical" because I never have to actually do anything here) I have to say that all credit for the day-to-day quality of the forum goes to the contributors, who require no moderation whatsoever.

And I thank Lemuel also. What a wonderful place he has facilitated to grow here!

Hello Michael I sharpen the scrapers as you explained &
I can tell you when you pull the scraper on some birch & a nice
roll of shavings comes off it makes scraping a joy .
I for one will not go back to trying to sharpen two sides .
Thanks again Ken
