Just curious to know...
what is the volume of standard violin? ... Easy to measure... just tape down one f-hole and fill with water.... drain and measure!

But before I traumatize a violin, has anyone measured or calculated it?
Thanks & Cheers! ... Mat

First, you have to define "standard violin." I have no idea what that would be, but from experience and reading I don't think volume per se is an important specification.

Hi Mat,

I remember reading somewhere that someone did measure the volume of an "average" violin. I don't remember where I read about this experiment so that is of no help to you but if I happen to remember, I will post it. It seems to me that when I read about this, it also involved an experiment with an "ergonomic" violin (or maybe it was a viola??) but I tend to cross wires and confuse things easily!

I do remember a guitar builder filling a guitar with rice for the same purpose. Probably safer than using water, let alone beer. Surprised

Thanks everyone... It was just one of those curiosity questions that popped into my head.
What I was thinking about at the time was community project to engage elementary and secondary school students with the thought of creating a string orchestra using instruments that they have built themselves from materials they could find at home or scavenged from whereever.
.. Not sure where this will lead ... maybe nowhere, but who knows:)
... Bu I do like the rice idea, or maybe sand would be cheaoer if measuring a bass or cello:)
Cheers... Mat
