A set of pegs I fitted a year or so ago, into an old markie violin, now project past the peg box walls by about 2-3 mm.
When I fit them, I compress the holes by reverse reaming and then leave them about 1mm short of the outside of the pegbox wall.
Is this condition a function of the quality of the ebony peg material, or the wood of the pegbox? or am I just not reverse reaming enough?
Thanks!... Mat

One thing I do, in addition to the "reverse reaming", is that I lubricate the contact areas with peg dope quite liberally, and then work them in vigorously, twisting, and pushing, to compress whatever will compress...

Both the maple and the ebony seem to compress, and I do not trim the pegs until after doing all this. It seems to help.

You also need to account for humidity levels. If it has been high for a while the pegs will swell and the holes get smaller. Then when it gets dry the reverse happens. Liberal lubrication SEEMS to reduce this effect.

Thanks guys... I think that humidity is the major factor here. It likely was done in the summer in humid conditions and now being so dry.
Gives rise to another thought... I'll fit the next set of pegs after drying the pegbox and pegs for 24 hrs with a desiccant, then see what the change looks like after a return to normal humidity.
Try not snare that free range easter bunny... I want him to bring me my organic creme egg:)... Cheers, Mat
