are the simple varnish formulas made from cooking rosin worth the effort
compared to using off the shelf violin varnish ????? Do they have any
advantages to make them worth the effort/danger cooking- ect. ?

I don't think one can generalize about what custom recipes do for one. Things like color, how pigments work in the varnish, how the varnish works with a given ground or against the wood, these things all appear in people's reasons for making their own, but different reasons appear for different people.
So I think the prerequisite for making your own is wanting a specific characteristic which you can't get otherwise. I use Michael Darnton's mastic varnish recipe because I like the way it dries down and preserves wood texture. I've got my eye out for other varnishes which have useful optical properties though. |

thanks Andres:
I guess I don't really know enough about varnish to know if I want to try
it. It looks like it would be a little bit of a priject to cook but do-able.
I would think getting the correct raw materials might be the bigger problem.
Is there any one place that would have most or all of the raw ingrediants
????????????
My local art stores did not even know what I was talking about when I described what I wanted to do......

You can get the materials for most varnish recipes from Kremer/Synopia online.
The special hot plate and thermometers can be had from lab supplies or sometimes from Ebay if you know what you're after.
One needs a space where people won't call the fire department when they see smoke rising up. I live downtown and wouldn't try it in my back yard. |
