Are you referring to molds? I make mine with solid wood. In general makers will prefer making their own molds.

no, not a mold, a clamping frame for clamping the instrument when fitting a bass bar.
I have some from some thick plywood, but a certain cello top from Mirecourt, not the cello with the neck affliction, is filled with tension and needs to get flattened to fit a bess bar propperly. there is so much tension in the top ( with out a bass bar) that is it bending the 18 mm plywood clamping frame, so I am looking for an aluminum one.

and now, the same post translated into Italian ( most likely rather poorly)
by http://www.freetranslation.com/

Let me know how bad it was Lu Man Fu, ok?

do you use a frame to fit the bass bar?
Jack

I have an aluminum violin frame that was a specially-made thing. I've never seen one for cello, though--only plywood for that.

I found one for violin for $150.
I can only imagine how much one for cello might be specially made...

Do you know of someone I can contact for such a thing special ordered?

My first violin one was made with sheet aluminum and a bandsaw. You can saw aluminum easily on a bandsaw, but getting the blade in the center is a trick, so mine is made of two thicknesses, glued together, with the access slots in different places. You could do it in one thickness if you used a coping saw for the inside.

I did a run of violin-sized ones about two years ago. Since then I’ve only had one inquiry for another, otherwise I’d have made another batch by now. Someone’s asking $150 for one?? Wow I was charging wayyy too little. Wink

Hi J H,
There is an engineer in the UK who makes tools to order. His name is Brian Hart. I can supply his address and phone number if you're Interested.

These frames are available from Howard Core but are $150.00. If you find a cheaper source I would like to learn about it. I tried contacting Brian Hart about making a frame for the body of a violin but never heard back from him. http://www.howardcore.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=GW481956

Mine were not so pretty, but thanks to design input from Michael Darnton, they were effective on a wider variety of violin shapes and sizes.Smile :

I am looking for a frame that can be used on the violin body. It would have to be notched to fit around the neck. Have you considered making these?

I haven't run into a need for such a thing. What's it for?

Aluminum saws with woodworking saws (and planes with wood planes, too), so if you need a notch, it's not hard to put one there, yourself.

I have not found any commercial source for a “body frame”. It would be used to prevent distortion in a body as it is being worked on. Old bodies have a tendency to twist as one is working on seams, center seam, rib repair or replacement. I try to engage a flat surface to the top of the body to prevent this but I think a frame would work better to keep the top of the ribs and blocks aligned and give good access to the interior. I am not to keen on trying to cut up my Gewa frame as I want to continue to use it for tops and it looks like a work of art. I would like to find another top frame and cut it out to receive the neck and use it on bodies. If you make more please let me know.
