I have several cans of violin varnish that I purchaced from luthier supply that have dried in the can. Is there a way to reconstitute these varnishes. Some are oil, and some are spirit.

you may be able to resolvent the spirt base with alcohol, but why would you want to, use fresh finish to ensure a good job that is predictable.

you can reconstitute, but it will be much better, smoother and easier to get some fresh mix.

I French polished my first three violins, using spirit varnish, with varying success. It is kinda fun to do, goes very slowly and let's you be intimately involved in the process. Worst case you can completely strip a violin in minutes with straight alcohol and start over. My 4th violin I switched to oil-based varnish and I like its hardness which allows to set up within a week or two from final coat.

My question -- is there a franch polish technique for oil-based varnishes?
