|
|
I am presently shaping the just glued-in neck of a full-size cello. I'm consulting various sources for the proper contour of the crotch of the neck where the thumb establishes a secure 4th position stop.
Is there some established distance from the innermost radius of the turn to the top plate? If there is, is the distance measured from the bottom edge of the top plate or the top edge?
As well, is there a proper countour to the turn like has been standardized for the fingerboard radius?
Much obliged in advance... |

Is this helpful?
Edge to neck stop: 25 violin 26 viola 40 cello
from this page:
http://www.bormanviolins.com/setupdimensions.asp
Should make note about this:
"The neck dimensions that I use are generally a bit smaller than other shops. I have altered these dimensions due to consistent requests from musicians."
How much this has been reduced??? Maybe someone can tell you. |

thanks Violinarius:
The question I have is 40 mm. from where to where ? Other authorities say it is 42 mm... but again is it from the edge of the plate to the middle of the centre edge of the neck heel... that is by a compass? |

I'm no expert, so maybe there are a few here that can say for sure.
The compass is placed at the top plate's upper edge where it meets the neck block, and this is done on each side, treble and bass, so you end-up with two arcs on the neck heel.
At the start the arcs should have some distance between them, and then as you remove wood carving the heel, the arcs should just touch, then you have reached the correct distance.
The Borman site does mention that he has reduced some things, so this maybe one of them.
Perhaps some players like the feel of this set-up better? |

Thanks violinarius:
Yes, Borman's distances are minimal... the other authorities are from 42 to 44 mm, that I have read. |
