After making some big violas I followed Toby Appel's advice to make some smaller violas... but I wanted the same sound of my big ones, so I made a "pasticio" of the Andrea Guarneri model to fit my sound ideas... this is the result, I named it "Giudita":

I'll have to try making an instrument sometime, instead of just restoring them. How many instruments have you made so far? _________________ Doug Wall

It's a beautiful work of art!
The interesting thing about making an instrument like this, is that it can be played and enjoyed for 300 years - not many things we make have such longevity.
Cheers,

Once again, Manfio, beautiful work. Have you thought about the ways you might approach making a 16 1/2" viola to get the sound of a 17"?

Thank you!
Jack, violas are unmercifull, so I was a bit scared about changing my 17 inches model, since they all sounded great.
So my idea was changing almost nothing but the soundbox length. So I kept the same width of the lower, C and upper bouts, the same top and back height (21 milimeters) and basically the same archings. Since the C bout was the same of my 17 inches model, I decided to keep the same long f holes too. I really liked this model. _________________ www.manfio.com
