Hi Everyone.
Have been reading through and find many interesting topics to learn from.
After completing my first violin, I can see where there is much room for workmanship improvment on the next. Purfling is one of those areas. Now after looking at Michael Darnton's and shershey's explanation on the miters, it looks much easier than what I did. A few caoxing swears and managed to get through it without looking too horible.
I bought my supplies through Leif, and through my excitment of building, I have emailed my progress to him. He has been helpful and very encouraging.
I'm sure I will learn quite a lot more from the discussions in the forums.
Look at my first violin, "The Savina" at

Nice work, Scott!
That is really gorgeous wood! I have never much cared for most birdseye maple, but that is enough to make me change my mind. Do you have any idea what particular type of maple it is, or where it came from? I don't think I have ever seen Birdseye I liked so well as that. And, for a first try, you did a very good job with it.

Nice work, and welcome to the forum. I think you can get a lot of good advice.
I kinda rushed the varnishing on my first that I finished in December. I haven't put pictures of it up o this site, I need to figure out how to do it. That one had a soft maple back that carved nice. I'm making 2 violins now out of some hard figured sugar maple that doesnt carve nice. It finishes really smooth, if you use a very sharp scraper on the ripples. I imagine the birdseye is much the same. I think the best way to get better is to keep making them and try not to make the same mistake over and over.
I hope this works, the other day it didn't. |

Hi Chet,
The wood was given to me from a friend in north central Wisconsin, Antigo. It is about 150 miles east of Eau Claire.
I think it was local wood, which would be sugar maple. It is very hard and also has kind of glittery stripes like the curly maple. I have'nt seen bird's eye like it before. _________________ Scott, a.k.a. Moodivarius

"Birdseye" Maple is an uncommon growth feature that is only found (as far as I know) in Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple). _________________ Leif Luscombe
