As everybody know (or then the majority of you all) know that in baroque period, the shoulder rest didn't even exist and the violonists had to play baroque violin by holding it near the chest (and even a little after the period it seems)...
SO my question is : does anyone know the technique of to play like this?? I am making some research by my side too but all I've found out for now its Tracy Silverman and his electric violin 6 strings... he's playing with his violin near the chest but the violin is hold up by a strap (so I'm finding for the technique WITHOUT any strap...)
Thanks to all who will answer me!

Here's the link for Silverman (you can also find some videos on youtube):

In the baroque period the violin was held in different ways: against the ribs, against the breast, and on the collar bone.
Today most baroque players rest the violin on the collar bone. By holding the neck more forward, and the tailpiece a little to the left of the chin, one can learn to support the violin this way.
However many good baroque players use a chamois cloth and lightly rest their chin on the instrument while holding it in a manner that could be considered somewhat more 'modern'.
Some useful information on shifting technique with a baroque hold can be seen here:

Also there are some very interesting comments here:

...and this is the best book on the subject of baroque style playing:

Good luck! |
