Hello all--
Should the grain direction of the bow point from floor to ceiling (up and down) as the player is holding it, or from side to side? Or does it matter? |

The grain ideally should be perpendicular to the sides of the head of the bow, or just off perpendicular. This grain orientation is the strongest. If the grain is parallel to the sides of the head, it may mean that the head is more likely to break off; There no doubt are examples made by fine makers which contradict what I've said, but I'm sure that is more rare than not. |

You are right, the grain runs from side to side not up and down. adn you are right that thre are bows from famous makers that go th eother way but it is the exception, not the rule.
Took a piece of very old pernabucco to a well known maker here only to find the grain directions go the wrong way. |
