Manfio (or others?)

You have mentioned in past posts that one of the coats you apply after priming the wood is "aqua de colla." SP?

You say it's dilute hide glue with alum.

First, what is the purpose of this layer, since you've already impregnated your wood with diluted oil varnish?

Second, what kind of dilution are you talking about, if I may ask...

and finally... how much alum, and what is the purpose of the alum???

Thanks, in advance.

Well, I make it by eye.... it will be quite diluted, when it's cold it will form a quite delicate gelatin... the allum is to make it less higroscopic. When applied over the wood it will penetrate completely in the wood, no glue will remain over the wood. It's funcion is reducing varnish absortion.

Thanks Manfio!

Your varnish photos are so successful to my eye, it's hard not to ask you everything about your process!

May I ask further how much alum is added by weight or volume to the diluted glue?

Best regards,

As if it were small pinch of salt for about 100 ml of water, the same amount you would use in an egg (but we are talking about sodium nitrite, please don't eat it, I just used this example to ilustrate the quantity I use).

I think I described my wholel varnishing system here sometime ago.
