Hello. I am an amater violinist(but a proffesional musician). One of my violins, the first one is a late 19th(1880.s)factory made german.
- How useful can be (at maximum) these violins for plating professionally?
Can be some of them used for playing as soloist or chamber, or adapted to Baroque? I mean: Can they have a proffesional use?
- I suppose it must depends of the instrument itself. How could I check the parameters in order to figure out the true quality of it?

There is a huge range of quality in German factory violins. These can range anywhere from nicely done, fully blocked instruments, to very roughly done instruments with gouge marks on the inside of too thick top plates, and no blocks. Depends on the instrument, but some would require a lot of work, including re-graduating the top and back, reinforcing corners, perhaps a new fingerboard, etc.. _________________ Doug Wall
