I recently received an old bow that came with a violin made in 1930.
It is a fine pernambuco stick, but has no marking anywhere that I can
tell. It is the first one I have seen with a metal tip. It has what appears
to be a small pin thru the sole plate.
It this the mark of a certain maker, or just a common practice with bow
makers years ago?

Silver or Gold tips are not uncommon to see on bows. The Hills used them all the time, other makers did so for different reasons.
Some do it to add weight to the tip of the stick, others for the look.

I've got an old German bow with a nickel/silver tip plate. Metal tips are one way to play with bow balance.
