Other than Ebony or Boxwood, are there any other recommendations for the wood to use to make violin pegs?

Fine grained rosewood-family woods, mountain mahogany, pernambuco...

Rosewood pegs usually work very well because the oils and resins found in the wood act as natural lubricants.

Ebony, being black, will match with all violin colours. The same may not be true to other woods.

As a maker, my idea is that the eyes of the player must be fixed in the instrument, not in the fittings, the instrument must be the star.

Ahhhhh, but your violins are beautiful. I am making my sixth and ,if it plays at all, I do not expect it to be played outside my home. So I shall retain the great luxury of experimentation and explore possibilties. Should I stumble upon something of interest, I shall post it here.

And thank you. I have a small lathe, so I'll try making my own for a while. If I accidentally make a good violin, I'll invest in some quality pegs.

Good! But making pegs, tailpieces, endpins and chinrests may be a science in itself, and the Romans liked to say "ars lunga, vita brevis"...

Perhaps you will have already suffient sutff related to violin making itself to think about the pegs. Dov Schimidt sells good ebony pegs for reasonable prices. Good luck!
