where is the best point of entry to begin top separation?....what tools are you using...i'm guessing razor knives and butter knives...i have a hard time visualizing doing this without rib damage...the knives are hot yes?

I use artists palette knives to start, "re-formed" butter knives in more difficult areas. Always hot water to dissolve the glue.

I generally start at an open seam. If there is not one I go to the lower bout oposite the tail piece.
Holding the violin in between my legs and using the palm of my left hand as a counter force, I take a piece of spruce with leather glued to it and a hammer. I put the leather pn the edge of the table and give it a light tap tap until the seam is opened.
Contiue with a reshaped butter knife (Razor knife will just cut into the wood) work the blocks from the inside out and always use the other hand as a counter force to prevent run away splits.

Good luck.
