This is a first time thing for me. After repairing a violin, I set to work
tuning it. All of a sudden there was what seemed like an explosion, or
a pistol shot. Pieces flew everwhere, and a string almost wrapped around
my neck. The tailpiece had cracked and shattered. I don't know how this
could have been prevented. I call myself checking the violin over for
cracks and things when I first get it. Please be careful at all times when
working on a violin, I know that this really got my attention.!!!
Thanks |

Good reminder, thanks. Lots of tension in a stringed instrument.
I was told this long ago and think it's good advice: don't tighten the strings when they're aimed at your eyes. |

Never happened to me... but got to thinking, and it seems most times when I am stringing up, the violin is always in front of me... I guess I am off to the safety store to buy a pair of safety glasses.... without my eyes, there is no restoration work! |

I have never done any damage that way, but a breaking string can hurt.
Once I did string up a newly repaired violin, and just as it came up to tension, there was a loud, terrible cracking sound, and all the strings went flat-- not totally slack, but quite flat. I checked everything, and could find no damage, so I began tuning again, and just as it reached pitch, it happened again.
Michael Darnton pointed out the trouble-- it was a Sacconi-style tail-gut that was slipping through the nut, one or two threads at a time. Replaced the tail-gut and solved the problem. But if Mr. Darnton had not spoken up, I am sure I would have taken the top off looking for a break inside. (Thanks again, Michael!) |
